 however do you know who made it a popular saying?

Harold B. Lee is the author of this popular saying 

that has been a part of greeting cards and gifts for the past fifty years.

He was the Eleventh President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints.

He is the author of  "Stand Ye in Holy Places"  and "Ye are the Light of the World" and many more publications on teaching in the LDS church.  

The library at Brigham Young  University  is named for him.
